Cat Being Weighted

An Overall Picture of Your Pet’s Health

At Goldorado Animal Hospital, we want every owner to have a clear understanding of his or her pet’s overall wellness. That’s why we recommend every patient undergo a full physical examination. This is the best way to establish a comprehensive view of your pet’s health moving forward.

Regular Exams at Every Age

Scheduling annual exams is a good habit to establish early in your pet’s life (within the first year). As your pet grows into adulthood, he or she will need consistent visits to ensure healthy growth and development. As your pet enters the golden years, we highly recommend twice yearly exams to check for more serious medical conditions.

  • Frequent visits are required during the first year of life for vaccinations, de-worming, fecal testing, and tracking overall development.
  • Adult pets require annual checkups.
  • Senior pets should be seen biannually and need more testing to ensure their health.

By having an ongoing picture of your pet’s wellness, our team is able to diagnose changes in health more quickly. Often, pets hide their pain. With a full physical exam, we can detect and address issues early on to keep your companion on a healthy track.

Essential Vaccines

During the physical exam, our team will also discuss appropriate vaccines your pet may need. The following are typically recommended for all cats and dogs:

Dogs

  • Rabies
  • DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parvo, parainfluenza)
  • Bordetella
  • Leptospirosis
  • Lyme disease
  • Rattlesnake

Cats

  • Rabies
  • Rhinotracheitis
  • Feline leukemia (FeLV)

You can trust our veterinarians to establish a vaccination plan that is tailored to your pet. Influences we consider include activity level, lifestyle, medical history, and risk for certain diseases. These and other factors help us craft a core vaccine plan and schedule that is most effective for your pet.

Parasite Prevention

Cat Physical

Protecting your pet from unwanted pests is a key element of overall wellness. In our area, heartworms, fleas, and ticks are very common, making regular preventives essential to your pet. At Goldorado Animal Hospital, we recommend all dogs and cats receive either monthly heartworm medication or an injection every 6 months. Our team will also make tailored suggestions about flea and tick treatments that are most appropriate for your companion.

Microchipping

Having a lost pet is a scary experience for everyone. Pet tags and collars are not a reliable form of identification and can easily become detached. That’s why we discuss microchipping with all owners who have not already done this for their pet.

Through a fairly quick and easy procedure, your pet will have a HomeAgain® chip inserted under his or her skin. If your pet becomes lost, clinics and shelters can easily identify your animal by scanning the microchip and contacting you via a national database of pet owners. The chip itself is about the size of a grain of rice and remains active for the duration of your pet’s life. With one simple procedure, we can help ensure a happy reunion between you and your beloved companion.
